Dr. Charles Root grew up in rural Montana and completed his pre-veterinary curriculum at Montana State College (now Montana State University) in Bozeman.  He received his D.V.M. from Washington State University in 1966, he did both an Internship and a Medicine Residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, has graduate training from Colorado State University in Radiology and Radiation Biology (M.S., 1969), and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1971.  He has held various professional and academic appointments at the Animal Medical Center, Colorado State University, the Ohio State University, Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital, University of California/Davis, Louisiana State University, and Oklahoma State University.  He has authored and co-authored numerous papers on various aspects of veterinary radiology. 

Dr. Root has also contributed to both editions of Dr. James Ticer’s textbook, Radiographic Technique in Veterinary Practice, and has authored one chapter and co-authored two others (with Dr. Bob Bahr) in all four editions of Dr. Donald Thrall’s Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology.  He has been very active in continuing education, having given presented over 160 lectures, seminars, workshops and short courses to veterinarians, technologists, and breed groups in the past 30 years. Dr. Root has remained in the private practice of veterinary radiology in the greater Seattle area.  He is currently operating Animal Medical Imaging (formerly Animal Radiology and Radiography Service), a specialty practice that runs strictly on a referral basis.  He serves as the staff radiology consultant, he is under contract to approximately 70 veterinary practices in Washington State and Alaska.  Additionally, Dr. Root’s practice involves radiographic interpretation both locally and remotely (via telephonically transmitted images from practices in WA, IN, NC, OH, and VA), consultation in veterinary radiography, preparation of radiographic technique charts, diagnostic ultrasound service, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, radiation safety consultation for veterinary facility design, and continuing education programs for veterinarians and veterinary technologists. 

He also worked as a relief after-hours clinician at several animal emergency facilities in the Seattle area for several years after moving to the region. Dr. Root served two terms on the Council of the American College of Veterinary Radiology, first in the 1970’s and then again in the late 1990’s and spent 4 years on its Examining Committee (the final year as its chairman). 

The extensive list of his accomplishments includes: He is being a former President of the Monterey Bay Area Veterinary Medical Association in central California, has having served as coordinator of the South Snohomish County Chapter of the Seattle – King County Veterinary Medical Association (S-KCVMA), being a Past-president (1987) of the S-KCVMA, served as its their representative to the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA), and is a Past-president (1991-1992) of the WSVMA. 

Dr. Root’s dedication to the WSVMA is apparent through his service on the Long-Range Planning Committee, the WOI (Washington, Oregon, Idaho) Steering Committee, the Political Action Committee, and the Editorial and Publications Committee.  He was the 1990 recipient of the WSVMA ‘s Distinguished Service Award and shared the same honor with several other veterinarians in 1998. Furthermore, Dr. Root has served many years as WSVMA’ s representative to the Washington Association for Biomedical Research and frequently lectures on the dangers of Animal Right’s extremism to interested groups.
