Join Joe Peterson, DVM, DABVP (canine/feline) and Ashley Byrne, LVT, CVT as they discuss the emerging practice of hands-free radiography in veterinary medicine.

Practice owners and medical leaders are at the forefront of providing remarkable medical care to their patients while providing the safest workplace possible for their teams. This session will explore why hands-free radiography is becoming an industry standard, what this looks like in real life, and what your teams need to implement these practices.

Session 1: Hands Free Radiography Basics & Rationale – Ashley Bryne, LVT
This session will discuss the principles of radiation safety, gaps in current radiation safety practices, and how hands-free radiography practices meet the needs of the veterinary team. Ashley will provide cover real-life patient positioning techniques and supplies to consider, as well as a deep dive into common questions on implementation.

Session 2: The Medical Approach to Hands-Free Radiography – Dr. Joe Peterson
This session will discuss the use of pre-visit medications and injectable sedation techniques to obtain quality hands-free radiographs in a fear free environment. Dr. Peterson will provide examples of pre-visit and sedation protocols and will address dealing with the painful patient.

Session 3: Advanced Cases & Techniques – Ashley Byrne, LVT
With the basics of hands-free radiography covered, this session will review how to approach advanced cases. Complicated case loads require careful consideration and multiple tools to address the needs of their patients. This session will address what to do when the stress is high, including a “decision-tree” approach and change management techniques for the team.

Session 4: The Medical Approach to Advanced Case Management – Dr. Joe Peterson
This session will review how to approach more challenging cases, including patients with respiratory and cardiac compromise and the painful patient. Dr. Peterson will cover additional benefits of safe sedation, and when it is better to wait on radiographs. A brief introduction to Point of Care Ultrasound will be discussed.

About the Speakers

Joe Peterson, DVM, DABVP (Canine/Feline) serves as the Medical Director for VCA North Division Animal Medical Center in Spokane, WA, and as the Area Medical Director overseeing 12 VCA hospitals across eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Montana. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 1988 and became board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2016.

Dr. Peterson has been part of VCA Animal Hospitals for the past 15 years, following a successful career in private practice, including ownership of a small animal hospital in Spokane. His professional background spans general practice, emergency medicine, and advanced diagnostic imaging. He has taught Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and is an advocate for Hands-Free Radiology.

He lives in Spokane with his wife, Judy, and their very spoiled Labradoodle, Bode.

Ashley Byrne, LVT, CVT is the current President of the Washington State Association of Veterinary Technicians (WSAVT) and Regional Technician Director for VCA Animal Hospitals. Ashley has over 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine, starting at PIMA Medical Institute where she achieved Veterinary Assistant Certificate and later returned to be a graduate from PIMA Medical Institute’s first Veterinary Technician AAS program. Ashley has worked for VCA Animal Hospitals as well as in private practices in the PNW area. In her role with the WSAVT, Ashley regularly works with the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) and Washington State Veterinary Board of Governors (VBOG). She has recently joined Today’s Veterinary Nurse’s Editorial Advisory Board.

Cancellations received by February 5 will have $10 deducted for processing fees. There will be no refunds for no-shows who have not notified the WSVMA after February 5.
