WSVMA DVM: Masterclass Webinar – Cellular Nutrition & GI Health: Factors Impacting the Gastrointestinal Environment and a Review of Recent Equine GI Research

June 24, 2022

Join us Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 12pm for our webinar – Cellular Nutrition & GI Health: Factors Impacting the Gastrointestinal Environment and a Review of Recent Equine GI Research with Dr. Darci Agin and sponsored by Zoetis. Among the most frequently used class of medications in equine veterinary medicine, phenylbutazone-induced GI injury and dysbiosis are adverse events associated with widespread NSAID use. It is known that phenylbutazone alters GI barrier function in vitro and ex vivo, but the effects of NSAIDs on gastrointestinal barrier function had not yet been assessed in vivo until this recent study completed by Dr. Canaan Whitfield at Texas A&M University. While the 16S rDNA method has been widely utilized in human medicine as a measure of GI barrier malfunction (AKA “Leaky Gut”), until this study, equine “Leaky Gut” research had not yet introduced an objective method of quantifying gastrointestinal bacterial translocation. This discussion will focus on the philosophy of “cellular nutrition,” the issue at hand related to the pathophysiology of “Leaky Gut”, the application of NSAIDs and the impact on the equine gastrointestinal tract, as well as the details of the recent TAMU research and results of the study (Whitfield-Cargile et al., 2021).

Dr. Darci Agin is a human Sports Medicine Physician who specializes in orthopedic issues involving the shoulder, the prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries, as well as performance enhancement for professional athletes through strength, conditioning, and nutrition. Dr. Agin has extensive on-field experience, including providing emergency medical services for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, as well as working with professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, PRCA, and currently, travels extensively on the ProRodeo circuit as the Director of the XBR Sports Medicine Team.
