He owned two practices during his career. Bellevue Animal Hospital and Island Cats Veterinary Hospital (Mercer Island). His special areas of interest have been feline geriatrics, client communication, and the training and mentorship of veterinary students and recent graduates. As an Adjunct Professor for Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine between 2018 and 2025, dozens of veterinary students received part of their clinical training at Island Cats. From 2016 to 2020, he served on the Board of Directors of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation serving the charitable arm of the AVMA. Dr. Marshall served more than seven years (2016-2024) as a member of the WSVMA Board of Directors, being elected for one term as President in 2019. He also served as one of two representatives from Washington State in the House of Delegates for the American Veterinary Medical Association (2020-2024). In the summer of 2018, Dr. Marshall and a WSU Veterinary student, worked to coordinate the first annual gathering of veterinarians and students (then later technicians, assistants, and plus ones) to hike into the beach in Olympic National Park for a multi-day camping adventure. “Vets Outdoors” has been a perpetual highlight on his calendar every year since. Hundreds of students around the world benefited from the Pandemic inspired online Cat Class he initiated and recruited dozens of expert guest lecturers to deliver 50 hours of cat related content to students after all the vet schools shuttered classrooms in March of 2020. In 2020 he was elected to serve on the Board of the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative and was appointed to serve on the Advisory Group of the AVMA/AAVMC Commission for a Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive Veterinary Profession. He also enjoyed engaging with new grads as the North American Mentor for the VetX International Thrive community, Mentor Vet, and Ready Vet Go. In 2024 Dr. Marshall, was elected to the position of Vice President of the AVMA to serve a two-year term as the liaison between the AVMA and the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine that the AVMA accredits around the world. Besides the time spent practicing at the two clinics he has owned, he also enjoyed volunteering at the Doney-Coe Pet Clinic in Seattle when possible. He married his vet school classmate Dr. Diane Marshall the year they graduated. They raised one daughter and one son. Dr. Marshall enjoyed getting to all the corners of the Pacific Northwest to work on honing his landscape photography skills, and during the winter he participates in a local curling league. In 2024 Dr. Marshall, with WSU Vet Student Sara Rae, started a podcast called “It might Get Weird” highlighting the milestones and challenges of the journey through veterinary school. |
