Dr. Arnold Slater will always be remembered by those who know him as the political veterinarian.  He took up the cause of veterinarians in the state legislature and fought for the importance of our profession in the health field.  In addition, he was instrumental in establishing the Veterinary Technician Act, the State Diagnostic Laboratory, and a Political Action Committee as well as other milestones in our profession.

Arnold started working in his father’s meat market when he was 11 years old as a delivery boy, meat cutter and a cleanup person.  After moving to his grandmother’s farm, he took on other animal responsibilities.  Out of this early background, he developed a desire to be a veterinarian.  His high school advisor guided him in his choice of studies and in applying to Washington State College.  There, he was accepted into the veterinary school and graduated to become one of our state’s most honored veterinarians.
