Certificate Program available to create more inclusive workplaces

June 4, 2021

A new certificate program on AVMA Axon empowers veterinary professionals to turn our workplaces into safe, healthy, inclusive environments where individual differences aren’t just tolerated but recognized and valued.

The Brave Space Certificate Program is a self-paced, interactive course on AVMA Axon offering up to 7 continuing education (CE) credits.

Brave Space helps veterinary professionals gain a deeper understanding of those around us—from team members to clients, patients, and the communities we serve. As healthcare professionals, we must be able to meet the needs of all people, regardless of differences in race, sex, gender, ability, or any other lived experience. Research shows that diversity and inclusion make businesses more competitive, and more likely to succeed.

What you’ll learn

Come away with practical tools and strategies to create your own Brave Space—one that sees and welcomes everyone—both at work and elsewhere in your life. The program is comprised of three categories and seven modules exploring these topics:

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Combating unconscious bias and marginalization
  • LGBTQIA+ 1: Identity and understanding
  • LGBTQIA+ 2: Inclusion and support
  • Understanding and addressing racism

Interpersonal violence

  • Interpersonal violence 1: An overview
  • Interpersonal violence 2: Plan, prevent, respond

Workplace harassment

  • Preventing workplace harassment

To begin, participants must complete the first module – “Combating unconscious bias and marginalization.” The remaining sessions can be completed in any order, either individually or as a unit. Earn 1 CE credit for each module completed. When all seven are completed, you’ll receive an AVMA Brave Space certificate of completion.

The program is free for AVMA members and costs $75 for non-members.
