According to a report by the AVMA, the veterinary workforce is set to substantially expand in the next decade due to the growth of educational opportunities. Three new veterinary schools are graduating their first classes in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and there are currently 12 more in development. Existing U.S. veterinary colleges are also increasing class sizes. The influx of new veterinarians presents an opportunity to plan for their integration. Veterinary practices can prepare by strengthening onboarding programs and utilizing resources like the AVMA’s MentorVet Connect partnership. The data emphasizes the importance of responsible workforce planning.
