WSVMA presents January 23 CE intensive Abdominal Surgery Updates

January 7, 2022

Join us on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022 from 12 – 4pm for one of our premier WSVMA DVM: Masterclass Intensives, featuring Dr. Catriona MacPhail and sponsored by Banfield Pet Hospital. Routine abdominal procedures commonly performed in general practice have some subtleties that can make these surgeries more efficient and successful. In this program, common abdominal surgeries will be reviewed with a focus on updates about the techniques, preoperative workups, and postoperative care.

Dr. MacPhail will cover the following topics:

The Abdominal Explore: Surgery as a Diagnostic Tool
Surgical exploration of the abdominal cavity can be a valuable diagnostic tool, particularly when imaging is equivocal in helping discover what is wrong with an animal. This session will address frequently asked questions about general abdominal surgery in the cat and dog.

Gastrotomy/Enterotomy DIY
While simple GI surgery for obstructive foreign bodies seems straight-forward, there are numerous tips and tricks to make the procedures go more efficiently and smoothly. Updates on postoperative GI surgery will also be discussed.

Why A Simple Cystotomy May Not Be So Simple
Cystotomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in small animal surgery; it is most often performed for removal of uroliths. However, “cystotomy failure” occurs in up to 20% of cases, meaning stones are left behind in the bladder or urethra. Methods to avoid this and other cystotomy complications will be presented.

Splenectomy Without Fancy Toys
A splenectomy in a specialty hospital is often performed using advanced hemostatic modalities. This session will discuss tips and tricks for routine splenectomy by hand-ligation of vessels, as well as other topics involved in this procedure.

Catriona MacPhail, DVM, PhD, DACVS, is a Professor of Small Animal Surgery at Colorado State University (CSU) Veterinary Teaching Hospital. After receiving her veterinary degree from Texas A&M University, Dr. MacPhail completed a rotating internship, surgical residency, soft tissue & surgical oncology fellowship, and PhD all at CSU. Dr. MacPhail has been on faculty at CSU since 2004. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), and ACVS Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology. Dr. MacPhail’s primary clinical and research interests include trauma, wound care and reconstruction, upper and lower respiratory surgery, gastrointestinal and urinary surgery, minimally-invasive surgery, and surgical training of the veterinary student.

The program will be held online via Zoom and will provide four (4) hours of high-quality continuing education. Registration is $99 for members, $149 for non-members. The webinar will be recorded so even if you can’t watch on Sunday, sign up and you’ll be provided access to the recordings to watch at your leisure.

Note: For the duration of the COVID-19 declared state of emergency, and for 90 days following the end of the emergency, the Veterinary Board of Governors has removed the limitation on the number of pre-recorded webinars that qualify for your total CE hours.

Register today at the WSVMA website.
