Join us Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 12pm for our webinar Tissue Donation in Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Helen Newman, and sponsored by Veterinary Transplant Services, Inc. The objective of this course is to educate veterinarians and technicians about the importance of tissue donation and patients in need of bone and soft tissue transplants for orthopedics, ophthalmology, and dentistry. It will discuss how advances in medical technology have allowed transplanted tissues to restore many animals to good health and how grafts help treat a variety of disorders. Attendees will learn how to approach the issue of donation with pet owners prior to euthanasia and how to screen for suitable donors based upon a pet’s health history and acceptable donor criteria.
Dr. Newman received a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of California in 1979, Riverside, her Ph.D. in Biological Structure (Anatomy) at the University of Washington in 1984 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology until 1988. For the next 11 years, she was involved in human tissue banking at the American Red Cross and the Northwest Tissue Center; both nationally-known tissue banks accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). She became one of the first Certified Tissue Banking Specialists (CTBS) of the AATB and she maintained an appointment as Affiliate Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Newman founded Veterinary Transplant Services, Inc. (VTS) in 1996; the first veterinary version of a human tissue bank.
