Veterinarians as vaccine administrators?

January 29, 2021

As states grapple with how to roll out the vaccine to millions, they’re looking to recruit qualified professionals to assist in the effort. A few states have approved temporary emergency authorization for veterinarians, along with many other health professionals, to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

In Washington, the Department of Health has not approached us about such an effort. Interestingly, the director of the Washington State Hospital Association made comments recently about how veterinarians and veterinary technicians are well qualified to assist.

We’ve received calls from members expressing their willingness to help in the massive undertaking of vaccinating Washington residents. Noble intentions, but perhaps a bit complicated. Veterinary malpractice insurance is unlikely to cover any adverse event that may arise from vaccinating a human patient. Two things would have to happen in order for us to help – if we’re asked. First of all, we need to be vaccinated. Secondly, Gov. Inslee must include automatic immunity in any temporary emergency order.

As always, we’ll keep everyone informed the minute we receive new information.
