A study by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), made possible by a grant from Banfield Pet Hospital, a VMAE Strategic Initiative Partner, finds that pet ownership saves the U.S. health care system an estimated $22.7 billion per year. This number includes savings of $15 billion in doctor visit costs, $4.5 billion in reduced obesity costs, $1.8 billion in savings related to health maladies connected to loneliness and social isolation in seniors, and $672 million in less spending on children’s clinical diagnosis of anxiety.
