Dr. Karl Salzsieder

Karl Salzsieder

DVM, JD, CVA

Statement of Candidacy

My interest in serving on the board is to give back to the profession (that I am forever indebted to), now that I have more time, since selling my two multi-doctor practices, and while continuing to be a veterinary practice broker. My skills include having been a veterinarian representative, in the past as a defense attorney for veterinarians appearing before the Washington State Veterinary Licensing Board. My past includes being Chamber of Commerce president, Rotary president, and church president, and Southwest WA local veterinary association past president. My current credential as a certified valuation analyst (CVA) and attorney (JD) gives credence to continued working with veterinary practitioners as a consultant and practice broker to help veterinarians transition to life after practice.

My professional practice career began, in Toledo, WA in 1974 upon graduation from WSU, CVM, with opening a large animal veterinary practice, with special interest in dairy practice, after growing up on a dairy farm. My lovely spouse, Derene, answered the phone from home to take client calls. The practice included clients up to 60 miles away. This practice became the Toledo Veterinary Clinic, for SA and LA practice. Next, we extended to Longview, WA for the Equine Veterinary Clinic and the Longview Veterinary Hospital (LVH). After graduating Northwestern School of Law in 1988, Salzsieder Legal Service was opened. This lead to a veterinary consulting practice and becoming employed by VetSmart, later becoming Banfield. I opened their first franchise or charter practice in Spokane, WA. In 2005, the purchase of Yelm Veterinary Hospital (YVH) was completed, while selling LVH to my partner. In 2017, Deschutes Animal Clinic (DAC) was acquired. Both YVH and DAC were sold to corporate in August 2022, after 48 years of practice ownership. My pre-veterinary undergraduate work was in agriculture economics, so I enjoy helping veterinarians, with business development, and transition of their professional careers.

It is my belief, everyone should be given the chance to succeed in America and our profession. I believe there should be equal opportunity for all races, economic status and background. I would support fairness in all opportunity for veterinarians, students and clients. I support WSVMA’s intent to operate with their DEI standard in mind.
