DVM MC Report – Dental Disasters

August 29, 2024

Dr. Diane Carle, DVM, DACVD, provided a 1-hour DVM Masterclass entitled Dental Disasters and How to Avoid Them on August 20, 2024.  Dr. Carle is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. She received her undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and her Veterinary Medical Degree from Tufts University,  and completed her residency in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery in Massachusetts.

As Dr. Carle commenced the webinar she noted that genuine disasters in Veterinary Dentistry are rare.  She did advise that Penetrating Orbital Injuries could come under the category of disasters and then noted several techniques and precautions to avoid this type of injury.

The balance of the webinar was focused on how to minimize and manage the complications that arise for everyone who undertakes dental procedures.  Complications, precautions, and other procedures discussed included: Retained (fractured) Roots; the extraction of Retained Roots; Crown Amputation; Mandibular Tooth Extraction; Jaw Fractures; Tooth Root Transportation; Dehiscence; excessive Bleeding; Infection; Client Education; and Post Extraction Oronasal Fistulas.

Dr. Carle finally noted those areas where Veterinarians with relevant experience could undertake dental procedure and also outlined situations where referral to a specialist was advised.
