Welcome to our podcast, Healing the Healers: Real Talk with Medical Professionals! In this podcast, you will hear from a group of veterinarians from the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) Power of Ten Leadership Academy tackling tough topics that medical professionals are dealing with today. We interviewed health care workers across many professions including acupuncture, dentistry, nursing, physical therapy, psychiatry, and more in order to gain a better understanding of the common challenges many of us face everyday. In this episode Dr. Shayla Johnson and Dr. Lily Ngai discuss salary and debt in veterinary medicine. They compare starting salary to debt ratios for several other health professions, as well as discussing the pandemic's impact on the job market and salaries. They also discuss different pay structures and how these impact the decisions veterinarians make about work-life balance.

In this episode, 3 more of our doctors; Nicole Gilmore, Maggie Schroeder and Victoria McLean discuss mental health in veterinary medicine and across health care professions. They discuss the emotional toll of being in a care giving profession, strategies to help support your personal and colleagues mental health, as well as resources dedicated to support for those in need.

Three of our vets, Dr. Baines, Dr. Hirota and Dr. Onofryton discuss their different experiences with trying to maintain work-life balance in the veterinary profession. Included are some interesting comparisons to other health professionals, and the ways they have managed to set boundaries. They discuss how to handle client communications, medical records and time off from work as well as how the pandemic has impacted these boundaries.

The conversation also touches on some software resources:

  • https://software.idexx.com/ is a cloud-based veterinary software program that allows coworkers to communicate and assign tasks to one another.
  • https://getweave.com is another useful tool that allows practitioners to contact clients from their own phones using the business line.
