by Rebecca Smedley, DVM, MS, DACVP
Participants will learn tips for sampling, shipping, and interpreting skin tumor cytology and biopsy reports. They will also learn what conditions warrant a liver biopsy in canine patients, how to sample the liver in dogs and cats, and what to expect from the biopsy report.
Cytology or Biopsy – That is the Question
Participants will learn the advantages and disadvantages of cytology versus biopsy samples. We will discuss when to use each method, how to obtain diagnostic cytology and biopsy samples, how to package samples and what to expect from your pathology report.
Getting the Most from your Tumor Biopsy Report
Participants will learn how to accurately interpret the information provided in surgical tumor pathology reports. We will also discuss the various ancillary tests (e.g. immunohistochemistry and tumor panels) that are often recommended for diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment of common tumors.
When to Biopsy the Liver of Your Canine Patient and How to Submit Liver Biopsies – Part 1
Participants will learn when a canine patient should have a liver biopsy performed. We will review the role of hepatic biopsy in various common clinical scenarios and discuss expected histopathologic findings.
When to Biopsy the Liver of Your Canine Patient and How to Submit Liver Biopsies – Part 2
We will continue case reviews from the previous session and discuss the preferred methods of obtaining liver biopsies, number of samples needed, how to preserve and mail liver biopsies, what testing to request, and the various special stains used.
