New strain of rabies identified
New Mexico health officials report that a woman was bitten by a fox carrying a previously undocumented strain of rabies. The state Department of Health obtained genetic sequencing from a sample taken from the infected fox which determined that the strain is distinct but related to other rabies strains found in bats. The woman received post-exposure prophylaxis and did not develop rabies. Dead bats and foxes found in the area will be collected and undergo testing.
